TBS6981 card causes system freeze at boot up

TBS6981 card causes system freeze at boot up

Postby flycop2000 » Tue Aug 21, 2012 3:27 am

I have a 6981 card which I took out of my old setup to insert into my new system. My new system M/B is an Asus P8Z77 - V PRO with onboard graphics, Ivybridge i7 CPU, 8gb Corsair RAM, Corsair 750 watt PSU. When I put the card into the small PCIe slot 1 and power up, the Red coloured VGA LED lights up on the M/B and the system freezes, no output to both my monitors. If I put the card into the other small PCIe slot, the system boots OK but windows does not detect my card. I have the latest BIOS for the board and all the latests M/B drivers.
If I go into the BIOS and give all the PCIe slots equal power, my card when placed into each one causes the RED LED to come on and the system to freeze!
If I insert my Blackgold PCIe TV card into the slots, everything works fine. I have tried putting my 6981 back into my old setup and it worked OK.

There seems to be some kind of hardware conflict between the board and the card?

Any ideas how to resolve this?

I'm getting this exact problem, with board plugged in motherboard won't pass POST, or even bring up VGA. Without the board plugged in everything is fine. My motherboard is Asus P8H77-I. Unfortunately I have no other PCs available to test wether the card is working. I guess the TBS6981 is deviating from the PCIe spec somewhere subtle which hasn't yet been observed. Does anyone know if it's possible to get a replacement from TBS for one of their USB tuners instead?

Hi

Do you have inserted the Cable with TBS6981 when you boot up your PC?
If you have ,would you mind removing the cable and have a try again.

Kind Regards

Hi Steven,

I've tried with and without the 12V cable to the card, the results are the same. I've fiddled with pretty much every setting on the BIOS to get it to work as well, but no luck. Haven't even seen VGA come up with it plugged in.

It's probably worth noting that I checked the voltage on the 12V line when the card was plugged in and it was absolutely fine. I'm running a low power ITX motherboard on a 150 W power supply, no GPU and a low power Core i3, my power supply should be ample for my setup. Is it worth getting in touch with european support to arrange a test of the card for problems and swap for a USB version (if the card turns out to be fine) or is that pretty unlikely to happen?

Re: TBS6981 card causes system freeze at boot up SOLVED

So this issue was resolved for me with BIOS revision 0814 from Asus customer support. I guess they'll release it in due course onto their support website, if not contact them directly, their customer support seems pretty good.

For the record, Asus also gave me a pre-release BIOS update (v1616) for my P8Z77-M board which also fixed this problem :)
