Mea culpa. I had commented out the line $(MAKE) -C ../linux apply_patches in the v4l/Makefile (it does report a lot of errors - but I think the real error when I did that was that I didn't have the kernel headers properly configured). Built installed and appearing in tvheadend. Thanks for your help....
