Be assured LIRC and remotes do work,.. although it can be a painful road getting there... it took me a while You certainly need to enable the protocol for your remote,.. just using LIRC will not work I think, as the system will not know what remote codes your are talking in,.. check out this web lin...

But not sure why,.. stopped LIRC,.. removed LIRC,.. including /etc/lirc directory

Reinstalled LIRC,.. same settings,.. and irw all started working,..

So have now managed to get the remote working,.. in a manor of speaking. I can move the cursor up and down via the remote,.. ie I can replicate the up down cursor keys. The next step of using programmed keys to tie into mythtv eludes me,... I have various files including .lircrc in my home directory...
