Openelec for MatrixTBS

Postby piotrasd » Mon Feb 24, 2014 6:52 am

Hi
Maybe TBS dev team could make fork of Openelec git

https://github.com/OpenELEC/OpenELEC.tv
and little edit for possibility build for MatrixARM - if i good saw enough change bootloader
(after that could make pull request )

i know @saure from Openelec Team is interested of TBS Matrix - but still dont get sample of MatrixTBS
(for develop and make support)

sooo. its a distrobution that uses xbmc as its frontend ? matrixtv already does the same thing. Seems like a ton of work just to end up at the same result.

There other advantages ? Its a ton of work porting all the IMX stuff over to another distro, looks like Cubie has initial support, but I dont see alot of the GPU stuff in the packages that youd need.

@updatelee so you are little blind ;)

If you check carful source you will find for xbmc patch - with contains all @wolfgar changes for GPU ;)
(and is updated evey change of @wolfgar)

There other advantages ?

Yes ?
- Bluetooth support ? with easy remote maping from XBMC GUI, and possibility sending files over Bluetooth
- Wifi support from XBMC GUI
- possible ON/OFF services like SSH, SAMBA etc from XBMC GUI
- Addons like transmission, couchpoatato, sickbeard, sabnzbd etc.etc. installed and updated from Openelec repo
- TV backend but with possibility setup main function from XBMC Gui
- oscam also like addon
- easy update system - just put 2 files to folder UPDATE and restart box
- backup/restore settings from XBMC GUI (but is no needed because after update/dowgrade you dont loose them)
and many more

Then that's the way to go ;)

Furthermore, there are some guys that working hard to merge imx6-xbmc to an official branch, so support for OpenElec should be nice.
https://github.com/xbmc-imx6/xbmc

P.S: OpenPCTV development is quite slow right now (no activity from the end of Jan)

yes, maybe devs of TBS could help with run on TBS Matrix

I suppose we only need change bootloader and line for boot from eMMC (we dont need boot from SD card)
i find this guide for first install
http://openelec.tv/forum/143-installati ... stallation

Yes :( and Openelec Team keep all time every part of system, xbmc, addons updated (just enough look on commits from git)
https://github.com/OpenELEC/OpenELEC.tv/commits/master

everyday they something doing ;)

About
https://github.com/xbmc-imx6/xbmc/commits/master

yes i know :) this is very good but im not suppose this changes come to master before final of Gotham
(gotham now going to Beta, they now only will be fixing stuff, do not add new one)

The most problem with I.MX6 is support from Kernel side :(
That why will be hard for Openelec team keep support for this platform
(they use foll all project latest kernels - even RPi have kernel support so also use latest kernels like 3.13)

Here's another reason to use OpenElec (and I've never used Openelect before but looks well)

The best advice I can give is that over the years Ive found it easiest to convince developers that something is better is to get involved. Dont wait for someone else to do the work, download it and get working on porting it over. Look for a similar board already supported and work off that.

The Cuboxi (http://imx.solid-run.com/wiki/index.php ... i_Hardware) uses the imx6 like the Matrix, it would be a good start.

Im more on the opposite spectrum, Im more interested in playing with the Matrix then actually using it. Ive been working with the yocto project and am pretty happy with the results so far. Id rather have a X desktop then a media centre. 3.0.35 works 100% in yocto, 3.10.17 is working at 90% (ethernet/wifi isnt working).

The hardware decoding is a PIA on these box's (Matrix is a SabreSD) it requires you use quite a few special libs and a special kernel etc. Basically you wont get 3.14 on it till freescale supports it, too much work.

yes i know that, they only try patch kernels but do not try push to master of kernel.
and i know about progress (3.10.17 is working at 90% (ethernet/wifi isnt working). )

also know that, but i dont have time for this, even for testing, im involve to many projects
(im always do myself what i need)

Yeep and i dont have now hope for support 3.14 :)

this is just problem of most ARM CPU :( most producents release 1-2 kernel/updates and stop supporting
that why Openelec dont support yet any other devocies from RPi - only RPI have kernel mainline support

lol know what you mean, Im spread pretty thin as well. I love learning and that keeps me pretty busy :)

In regards to the Matrix Im focusing on yocto. I just dont have the time to add another project to the list :( hopefully someone else picks this up

Just let you know the community that I'm working on Openelec thanks to friend ovi. Currently I have major components up and running. Including CEC (hoping it will be stable). Only volume and power buttons are still inoperable. I think first public versions will be available soon.
You can help me buy new work notebook with paypal donation, after 8 years it's time to upgrade.
