The way I did it was by using a USB disk and then specifying the <mount point>/dir (found it via the SSH CLI) as recording path etc in tvheadend. Works like a charm.
mount point for me was /media/sda1 and the I created a tv dir (and time shift etc). so the default recording profile in tvheadend for me is: /media/sda1/tv
