TBS6902 Not available after kernel update

TBS6902 Not available after kernel update

Postby petetbs » Fri Sep 27, 2024 11:15 pm

I purchased the above PCIe card last week and followed the instructions in the following link to install it. https://github.com/tbsdtv/linux_media/wiki

Everything went according to plan and the drivers built and compiled successfully. I added the necessary firmware as advised and the tuners were available for use in TVHeadend. This week there was a kernel update and unfortunately the tuners are no longer available for use. From what I was reading on the web it looks like the drivers are possibly broken as a result of the kernel update.

What I am trying to establish here is, if there is a kernel update is there a set procedure to follow to get the card and tuners recognised and working again or can this procedure be automated in some way by running a script or do I need to recompile the drivers every time there is a kernel update. For the moment I am booting from the working kernel and everything is working fine.

My system as follows:

HP-EliteDesk-800-G3-SFF
Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS
Working kernel version 6.8.0-40-generic 6.8.0-40.40~22.04.3
Failed kernel version 6.8.0-45-generic 6.8.0-45.45~22.04.1

hello
Sorry, there is no good way. because when the kernel updated, there are many libs will be updated. and include the drivers's installation path.
the better way is disable the kernel update.

That’s a bit disappointing. I had an Hauppauge DVBS PCI tuner and was able to easily update the kernel using this method https://github.com/b-rad-NDi/Ubuntu-med ... el-builder

If i decide to rebuild the TBS6902 drivers after a kernel update could you supply a list of commands for me to achieve this.

@crazycat thanks for that.

I was thinking it a bit strange that I’d have to stay on the same kernel forever. Is there a copy of the ./install.sh script available that I can examine.

So the procedure to install drivers for a new install is from the link I supplied above and for any subsequent kernel updates to fix the drivers I use the three lines you have supplied.

Again thanks for your interest in my issue and your informed reply.

Just to confirm after a kernel update using the following instructions will restore a working driver.

cd media_build
make distclean
./install.sh

Once again thanks @@crazycat for your interest in this issue and timely solution.
