TBS6981 vs. TBS6984 signal quality

Hi,

I have tried to change from a TBS6981 to a TBS6984 card.
However the signal quality seems to differ, which makes a swap a downgrade.

Conditions:
    Same PC-powersupply for both cards.
    Quad LNB, where on of the cables is slightly (6-10m) longer.
    Command line: ./szap-s2 -a 0 -H -c thor.conf -S1 "TV" -O25 -M5 -C34
    Thor 5/6 satelite (europe)
    Signal level is always reported as 74%, independet of cable length.
    BER is always reported 0 on both cards, independent of cable length.
    no option line for any card in modules.conf
    111118 linux driver
    There are no visible picture errors when using my TBS6981 receiver.
    There are no visible picture errors when using a Sagem DVB-S2 receiver
    There are visible reception error on TBS6984.
    All inputs on the TBS6984 gives ~ same snr when same LNA is used for testing

snr is always reported as 100% for TBS6981, independent of cable length.
snr is reported as 97.2% on average for TBS6984 for the shorter cable.
snr is reported as 95.4% on average for TBS6984 for the longer cable.

Are there less power supply rejection on the TBS6984 which can cause this issues?
Are there any options that could be tested?

Hello I have the same kind of issues, mainly on S2 HD channels on Astra 19.2

I replaced a Tevii card (which was working perfectly) with the TBS6984, and I observe some lags and squares
reception level is at 74%

I'm using VDR 1.7.22 / yavdr on Ubuntu 10.04 with stock kernel 2.6.32-37-generic-pae

hi Micke,

in the email to support@tbsdtv.com you additionally mentioned that on your TBS6981 card reception works OK on one of the two tuners, but with heavy errors on the other tuner, i.e. similar to what happens with your 6984 card on all tuners. so, that's completely not normal and even leaving aside 6984 for a moment there are has to be some reason to experience such issue with your 6981 card - it could be related to the problem you have with 6984 too. so, my suggestion is to do it step-by-step, i.e. first investigate what causes the problem with one of the tuners on your 6981 card.

so, here are my suggestions what to do/try in order to collect more details with 2 tuners of your 6981 card:

1) run 'szap-s2' without command line switches "-O25 -M5 -C34", i.e. leave the hardware/driver to auto-detect those parameters from the signal : 6981 and 6984 hardware/driver are capable to do that

2) create text file '/etc/modprobe.d/tbsfe.conf' with the entries:

options tbsfe dbm=1
options tbsfe esno=1

and reboot - that will active reporting of the 'signal' and 'SNR' on 'szap-s2' output by the driver respectively in dBm and dB, after do not use '-H' command line switch when run 'szap-s2', because that will prevent proper output of raw dBm and dB values. so, running "./szap-s2 -a 0 -c thor.conf -S1" is enough and for example output:

means:

* C/N in EsNo dB is 11.7 dB, because '75' in decimal value is 117 and 117 = 10*(EsNo dB)
* dBm is -42, because '2a' in decimal value is 42 and 42 = (-1)*dBm

3) while 'szap-s2' is running, execute:

# dvbsnoop -adapter 0 -s feinfo

and save the output - the point is to check the actually tuned frequency and estimate the frequency offset, because i suspect issue with your LNB, i.e. unstable oscillator, which could cause such issues

4) record raw TS stream and upload it somewhere to check it - again that can be done with 'dvbsnoop' while 'szap-s2' is running and has lock:

# dvbsnoop -adapter 0 -b -s ts -tsraw > file.ts

so, based on the test results of tuner A and B on your 6981 card you collected with the above steps we will proceed. thank you.

Today everything actually worked very well, except when it was heavy rain (no lock).
But that stopped reception on the sagem receiver so I can't complain about that.
I have tested three different transponders on Thor, on both tuners:
(adapter 0 and 1 are TBS6280 which works perfectly).

I have not yet captured any .ts streams, but right now the reception is OK when I tested (the reception isn't always bad on the TBS6981, but it is on the TBS6984, but it isn't installed right now so I can't test.

I will do more dumps when have issues again, but is the numbers OK/normal so far?
All numbers worst case:
    1MHz off (1185 instead of 1184MHz).
    -37dBm signal
    10.3dB SNR (worst case)

I have tried other LNA:s with same result, so I don't think the LNA is the cause.
