Strange Signal Strength For DVB-T2 MUX

Strange Signal Strength For DVB-T2 MUX

Postby CyberSimian » Wed Mar 28, 2012 12:44 am

At my location in the UK, I can receive 7 DVB MUXes: 6 are DVB-T, and one is DVB-T2. As I understand it, each MUX is allocated to a particular UHF channel, but some MUXes have frequencies which are 167KHz above or below the central frequency for the UHF channel.

Of the MUXes that I can receive, two of them have offsets of +167KHz, while the remainder reside at the central frequencies for their UHF channels (offsets of 0KHz).

Of the MUXes that have the +167KHz offsets, one is DVB-T (UHF channel 33 at 570.167MHz), while the other is DVT-T2 (UHF channel 21 at 474.167MHz).

In Windows 7 Media Center, it is possible to display the received signal strengths by going to: Settings/TV/Guide/Edit Channels/Edit Sources. For both UHF channel 33 and UHF channel 21, Media Center displays 12 entries: 3 entries for each of the 4 tuners. The 3 entries are for the three different offsets from the central UHF channel frequency (-167KHz, 0KHz, +167KHz).

So here is what does not look right:

(1) For the MUX on channel 33 (DVB-T), the frequencies and signal strengths displayed are:

569.833MHz (54% strength), 570.000MHz (64% strength), 570.167MHz (90% strength)

The signal strengths for this DVB-T MUX look to be correct -- the strongest signal is for the frequency with the correct offset.

(2) For the MUX on channel 21 (DVB-T2), the values are:

473.833MHz (54% strength), 474.000 (54% strength), 474.167MHz (54% strength)

The signal strengths for this DVB-T2 MUX do not look to be correct -- the signal strengths are the same for all offsets.

I do not know how Media Center obtains the signal strengths, but if it obtains them from the driver for the TBS6284, it looks as though the driver is returning for all 3 offsets the signal strength for the -167KHz offset.
