TBS6618 - does not work with linux driver under Ubuntu 12.10

Postby cduerr » Sat Feb 23, 2013 2:08 am

Hello,

my TBS6618 works fine under Windows 7 (Pro, 64bit) on the same machine.

After installing the linux drivers the syslog and lsmod indicate the modules have been loaded and the card should be ready, however, scanning for services in my local cable operator's network does not find any services (I have to use w_scan to get results as i need the card for vdr. I also put the card into a working vdr, but that vdr is not able to tune, either, despite it already has a working channel list from another DVBC card on the same signal). I doublechecked cable and card, both work fine under Windows on the same machine.

I use http://www.tbsdtv.com/download/document ... 130127.zip.
I installed as root, tar xvjf, cd folder, cp dvb-usb-tbsqbox-dvbc.fw /lib/firmware, ./v4l/tbs-x86_64.sh, make && make install, reboot.

The logs are attached as requested. Just let me know what you need and i happily provide you with more information. The Ubuntu 12.10 is a fresh install, just for the purpose of troubleshooting the issue.

If you'd ask me, i am not sure the firmware gets loaded at all (renaming dvb-usb-tbsqbox-dvbc.fw and rebooting does not change anything in the behavior of the card and no error appears in the dmesg).

On a different machine, i have the same behavior. On both machines, with a different Ubuntu (12.04), i have the same behavior.

Can you please advice what i am doing wrong? Thank you!

Hi cduerr.
From your lscpi_log
Code: Select All Code
02:00.0 Multimedia controller [0480]: Philips Semiconductors SAA7160 [1131:7160] (rev 03)
   Subsystem: Device [6618:0001]
   ...
   Kernel driver in use: SAA716x TBS
   Kernel modules: saa716x_tbs-dvb

and from your dmesg_log
Code: Select All Code
[   10.297409] Registered IR keymap rc-tbs-nec
[   10.297474] input: saa716x IR (TurboSight TBS 6618) as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.0/0000:02:00.0/rc/rc0/input6

[   10.568922] tbsci: Initializing TBS 6618 CI slot
[   10.569038] tbsci: Adapter 0 CI slot initialized
[   10.569041] DVB: registering adapter 0 frontend 0 (TurboSight TBS 6618 DVBC frontend)...

All looks good about your card.

Can you post output of "ls -l /dev/dvb", full w_scan command and output of these command?

Best regards.

Hi SergioDanielG,

thanks for looking into the issue. Here it is:

w_scan -f c
Code: Select All Code
w_scan version 20121111 (compiled for DVB API 5.6)
guessing country 'DE', use -c <country> to override
using settings for GERMANY
DVB cable
DVB-C
scan type CABLE, channellist 7
output format vdr-1.6
output charset 'UTF-8', use -C <charset> to override
Info: using DVB adapter auto detection.
   /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0 -> CABLE "TurboSight TBS 6618 DVBC frontend": good :-)
Using CABLE frontend (adapter /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0)

Using DVB API 5.3
frontend 'TurboSight TBS 6618 DVBC frontend' supports
INVERSION_AUTO
QAM_AUTO
FEC_AUTO not supported, trying FEC_NONE.

Hi cduerr.

I can't found nothing strange, unfortunatelly I haven't got any cable service to try by my self, but please try with this
Code: Select All Code
w_scan -fc DE -o 7 -v -F -t 3 -Q 0 -S 0

Then change modulation and try again
Code: Select All Code

Unfortunately, no change.

Attached are the logs of the different commands (modulation: QAM 64, 256 and 128).

What's next?

@cduerr

it's hard to tell why VDR doesn't lock for you based on the information you provided, but the problem with 'w_scan' is obvious - it's actually problem with your 'w_scan' build - as from your log it says "w_scan version 20121111 (compiled for DVB API 5.6)".

so, i'm suggesting to try the following:

* download for example 'w_scan-20120605' (i have tested that version) from here:

http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/repo/pkgs ... 05.tar.bz2

and build it:

===
# tar xjvf w_scan-20120605.tar.bz2
# cd w_scan-20120605
w_scan-20120605# ./configure
w_scan-20120605# make
===

and then run that newly build 'w_scan' and see if it will report proper DVB API version for TBS drivers:

===
w_scan-20120605# ./w_scan

w_scan version 20120605 (compiled for DVB API 5.3)
===

if that doesn't help, please, let me know what is the output of:

# cat /usr/include/linux/dvb/version.h

in your Linux installation. in fact if the above doesn't help my next suggestion is to replace your "/usr/include/linux/dvb/version.h" with the one from TBS Linux driver package and rebuild 'w_scan'. basically, the goal is to have proper build of 'w_scan' that reports "(compiled for DVB API 5.3)".

Hello,

thanks for your help. I made a backup of /usr/include/linux/dvb/version.h and replaced it with the copy from the TBS driver package, made a make distclean and rebuild the new w_scan as you indicated. This version now reports "built for API 5.3". But still no services found:

sorry, for the late reply - please, when post to the forum about Linux problems that obliviously required help from our support, send email to euro_support@tbsdtv.com with CC to support@tbsdtv.com, as it's explained in the 'How to report a problem with TBS Linux drivers':

viewtopic.php?f=77&t=2194

otherwise there is quite good chance you won't receive reply, because no one actually noticed your problem report.

anyway, please, test and tell us what happens - if you create "dvbc.conf" configuration file, which is text file just containing one line like this:

C 130000000 6900000 NONE QAM64

where 130MHz is replaced with valid frequency for your cable network, as well 6900 kSps and QAM64 are replaced with valid values for your signal. in such case if you run:

# scan dvbc.conf

does it work properly? also, it it works properly why not generate "channel.conf" in that way, i.e. using 'scan' instead using 'w_scan' which fails for you. also, i'm going to investigate what's going on with 'w_scan', but it should work too.

Fascinating. I have never ever had any issues with w_scan, but you are absolutely right. Using scan (from dvbapps package) and providing a valid initial transponder info, the network scan showed up all services on my local cable operator. There obviously must be something turning wrong when operating w_scan with your card. Anyway: I then installed X and vdr and was able to verify it is working end-to-end, but found one more issue (i will open a new topic for this).

Thanks a million!
