Maximum amount of /dev/dvb devices in MOI+

Maximum amount of /dev/dvb devices in MOI+

Postby joshi » Thu Aug 20, 2015 4:44 pm

Hello,

I'm into little experiment here (I hope things like this are not mentioned in Geneva convention):
Image
Long story short - I connected PCIe splitter to MOI+ and plugged 3 different TBS DVB-S2 cards in it: 6991, 6991SE and 6985, totaling at 8 logical adapters.
All 8 of them show up during startup both on LCD:

and in dmesg:

But in /dev/dvb there are only 4 adapters, no matter whether I put 2 or all 3 cards in:
Image

The strangest moment is that UI is stuck on 6 adapters (I booted up with only 6991SE and 6985 at first):

What I'm interested in:

Is 4 adapter limit somehow hard-coded intentionally for MOI+ or there is a way of removing this limitation?
If it is hard-coded, what is this limit for MOI Pro? 8 adapters?

Thanks a lot, xiaocao!

I will try this in the evening and report on results. This MOI+ box looks more and more attractive as time passes.

hi ,

it maybe need to change kernel source ,it's very complex.
if you want to insert two cards , i suggest you to buy moi pro , moi pro support 2 pci cards.

best regards!

Well, it's not 2, more like 4 cards. It seems a bit of waste of CPU, when you look at "top" - 5-6% per transponder. And - its a pure scientific interest. I contacted support and they are looking into this. It seems like this limitation is not intentional, more like unexpected side-effect.

When booting with all the stuff, how many /dev/dvb<n> devices you have?

The /dev/dvb/adapter<n> folders just host symlinks to the /dev/dvb<n>.* logical device names.

Have a look, it might be just a matter of creating a bunch of symlinks.

Ciao,
A.
