Can't get a signal in DVBViewer

Can't get a signal in DVBViewer

Postby BluetoothBG » Wed Sep 08, 2010 9:20 pm

First of all, I'm sorry that I'm starting with such a topic because I ordered my TBS6891 card last week, received it yesterday and I'm very, very happy with it! Thank you very much, I've been visiting this forum for a while and I'm impressed by your attitude to the customers, that is how every company should be!

But unfortunately I would have to look for some help.
After receiving the new card I installed it in my PC (PCI-e x16 v2.0), installed the drivers (2.0.0.4) and everything was working like a charm. Today when I turned on my PC I couldn't get a signal in DVB Viewer - it shows the signal strength, but no picture. DVB Dream is the same, except there is no signal at all, on any of the tuners. I decided that there is a problem with my dish setup, so I put the cable in my old SkyStar HD2 card and there was a signal and picture. Next step was to move the TBS6981 to another slot (PCI-e x1) - after doing a "Scan devices" in DVB Viewer there was a improvement - I got a picture and etc., but on the next reboot it was gone again. After that I did flash the MB BIOS with the newest one, reinstalled Windows 7 and here I am... still can't get a picture and DVB Viewer fails at scanning with red "PAT" button. On the same LNB I have a Dreambox DM500s and it shows about 13.5 dB of signal strength, so I guess it's enough.

Please, can you give me some advice what am I doing wrong or what else can I do?

Best regards,
Ivan

Ivan, please, make screenshot of "Settings -> Options... -> Hardware" in DVBViewer when it's not working for you too. thanks!

cody, here it is:

I've also tried with "Tuner A" as Preferred device and "Tuner B" as Do not use, with or without "Direct tuning", but the result is the same. Actually I think that there is a problem with software because I did another clean install of Windows 7, and at first start of DVB Viewer it worked perfectly, so I don't think there is a problem with TBS6891, more like the drivers or applications are faulty. But given the fact that no one else is complaining about this, I guess there is something wrong with my setup.
After first launch of DVB Viewer I restarted the PC and after that the problem was there again - everything seems to be fine (Device Manager, Hardware tab on DVB Viewer), but still no picture.

I decided to do some more tests with AltDVB (which has always been my favorite DVB program), downloaded the latest BDA2 drivers (v0.2.0.6) and it is the same - it shows signal strength but no lock or signal.

I'm sorry to bother you with problem like this, but do you have any idea what else can I try?

no, problem it's without any doubt very strange problem and as you said - it's true no one else has such problem and it's isolated to your setup for some reason. maybe, some strange hardware fault in your TBS 6981 prevents it from initializing after reboot, but that is really very wild guess, because i've never seen or heard about such fault before. if you turn off and then on the computer again if the cards recovers and start to get signal or not? since we can't figure out anything - it's just very weird problem, maybe, wise thing to do is arrange replacing the card with brand new one to rule out hardware fault as possible reason. please, send e-mail to euro_support@tbsdtv.com where we can discuss the details about it.

cody, thanks for your offer, but I still don't think that there is a 100% problem with the card itself. Today I bought a new dish and I'd like to do some more tests in the next 2-3 days, because I have doubts that the signal is not enough for the TBS6981. In one of our Bulgarian DVB forums I've read that CX24117 has a higher sensitivity than other chips and maybe is little "pretentious" about LNB and signal strength (which I'm not saying as a bad thing because as far as I know DVB-S2 specifications require better signal parameters). So my thought is that while Dreambox and SkyStar HD2 can work with worse signal, TBS6981 requires better signal quality to work as it should, I need to test if that is the case here.
I'm doing all this because today I happened to have picture after 2 consecutive reboots - although there were many artifacts in picture, as I restarted DVB viewer - in every 1 of 3 times there was a problem with the image, which is very strange. I'm also going to try the card in my server with CentOS 5.5 and another mainboard, just to rule out problem with Windows setup. I'll post the results here if I happen to find what is causing my problems.

it's nothing specific for CX24117, because just DVB-S2 is more affected by phase noise and other parameters of the signal and in short it has higher requirements for stable reception than DVB-S.

this is not correct, but it depends what you mean exactly by "better signal quality". it could be your LNB local oscillator is unstable.

testing in Linux would be very helpful to narrow down what could cause the problem and will rule out a lot of possible potential root causes for the problem. BTW, please, test in Windows too with this driver:

http://rapidshare.com/files/418279442/t ... .0.0.7.rar

which should be able to deal better with your LNB in case its local oscillator is unstable as already i mentioned.

P.S. i forgot to mention that driver version 2.0.0.7 is just for test and the package contains only *.sys files for x86 and x64 and so depends on if you respectively run 32-bit or 64-bit Windows, you have to manually copy corresponding "tbs6981.sys" file to "Windows\System32\drivers" folder replacing the old file there and reboot your computer and then after driver version 2.0.0.7 is installed and loaded do the test.

Hi cody,
I did some tests with the .sys file you posted (driver v2.0.0.4 and .sys file v2.0.0.7), but results are the same. I also noticed that driver on the TBS6981 page is updated, so I tried it too (driver v2.0.0.5/.sys file v2.0.0.5, after that driver v2.0.0.5/.sys file v2.0.0.7) but without success. During the tests I replaced my dish and cable with new ones, now the LNB is connected via 20 m of RG6 cable, signal is still 13.2 dB (at the Dreambox) but the weather here is pretty bad the last two days (it's rainy and there are clouds all over the horizon).
I downloaded Linux drivers but they seem to require kernel >=2.6.31 and "stock" CentOS kernel is 2.6.18 :( May try with Fedora but I need to free up one HDD.

Here are some screenshots after the changes of the dish and cable:
Signal status on my old SkyStar2 on another PC via the same cable TBS6891 is connected to
TS Analyzer running for 3+ hours after successful lock
TBS IP Service with lock
TBS IP Service on the next restart with no lock

Right now I've changed the PCI-e slot again and card is working fine after 3 restarts, will test again in the morning.

P.S. About my previous post - what I meant with "better signal quality" was exactly about LNB signal and phase noise - I had doubts that LNB or cable connection is not very good, that's why I changed the cable. The post in our forum was exactly about bad reception (or rather bad auto-tuning) at low environment temperatures because of bad LNB, not very suitable for DVB-S2 reception. Yet I don't think that this is my case, because when card "locks" on the signal there is no connection with the weather - two days ago it was sunny, today it's rainy and cold. I hope to be able to do some tests under Linux, at least there are better indications in dBm, lock and etc., hopefully they will provide some more info.

Best regards,
Ivan

There was a problem with v4l and Fedora 13, so I did some tests with Ubuntu. After reboot results are the same.

in very short i believe we all now can be sure what i suspect and suggested from the very beginning that it seems hardware fault in your TBS 6981 card. please, send mail to euro_support@tbsdtv.com for arranging a replacement with new board.
