cx23885[0]: mpeg risc op code error

Postby juriad » Tue Jan 10, 2012 4:57 am

Hello,

I have two cards TBS6981 and from time to time a problem occure, I usually have no log because it happens after a week, sometimes sooner, sometimes later. This time a few seconds after start.
Vdr has problems with its buffer and ffmpeg is missing frames and vdpau failes, artifacts can be seen. The only working cure is reboot.

It is a fully updated debian Squeeze, uname -a:
Linux backend 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Mon Oct 3 03:59:20 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I would attach logs, but either file without extension or with extension txt or log are not allowed.

Thanks for your help.

hello, i've heard few times about users having such error - "mpeg risc op code error", but it's not clear what causes the problem, because it was fixed with different approaches:

- most often it was fixed with using different motherboard or different Linux installation, which makes us think it's problem with Linux kernel on particular motherboards

- one time it was fixed with replacing the 6981, but it's not clear if during the replacement customer haven't updated his computer hardware or Linux installation, because we didn't find fault on the 6981 card he returned to us

so, what i can suggest is to try on different Linux installation/distribution, if that doesn't help even on computer - if it works there then that rules our 6981 fault. however, in any case if you wish you can e-mail us and request to replace the card, but i can't guarantee that will help, because according to experience that problem is very rarely caused by fault on 6981 board.

As I have two cards, I tried to pull one out and test this way the same configuration.
This time the same error occured, but there was no information about mpeg risc op code error as the previous time.

I will switch to the other card to eliminate the probability of hardware malfunction.
If the same situation occures, there must be a sw error, otherwise one card might be broken.

I posted dmesg log from the first described occurance to http://pastebin.com/LbBfh6jt .
I also tried to rmmod cx23885 module and modprobe it again, but it ended with an oops (don't know if this way is even possible)

Is there any way how can I help debug this?
Can you please send me older drivers to try them? AFAIK I haven't seen these errors until November upgrade (both kernel and dvb). It might be related to using rather older kernel.

Still using the first card.
Another reboot and system couldn't even attach card (this happend for the first time), very similar stuff happened during rmmod-ing and modpobe-ing cx23885
kern.log is on http://pastebin.com/s55NrjKD .
Next reboot, card failed after 231 seconds.

Hi,

my card throws the same errors now. It was purchased in May 2012 and was running ok from that time (had only the typical channel scan problems).

Then beginning on Oct 23 2013 I get this error ("mpeg risc op code error") and "tbs6981fe - command is not responding". Also sometimes the whole machine crashes with a kernel panic (null pointer in cx23885_video_irq).
Because I didn't changed the motherboard it can't be the motherboard.
Also the linux installation has not changed. Last kernel update was on Sep 21 2013 (to 3.10.7).
I monitoring my system and storing unusual kernel messages for years now, so I am very shure that before Oct 23 there was no such message. Since Oct 23 I got that message 7 times. Also since Oct 23 I get the message "tbs6981fe - command is not responding" very often per day (since Oct 23 many thousand times).
After rebooting the machine the card runs ok, i.e. I can receive channels. Only sometimes there are hickups (when vdr is automatically restarted).
I assume it's a hardware error.
Is there something I can do by myself to let the card run again (change a capacitor or so)?

Regards,
Mike
