5922 hangs after some time

5922 hangs after some time

Postby kughifar » Sun Sep 08, 2013 6:19 pm

Hi all,

back in May I purchased TBS5922 from DTV Europe and I am
quite happy with it: sensitivity is good, channel change very fast.
I use DVBViewer 5.2 and latest WIndows driver 2.0.3.1 on a
Acer Revo RL100 running Windows 7 64 bit.

Unfortunately, after some time (a few minutes to a few hours)
the device hangs in a strange way:

- LOCK led turns off;
- remote no longer works;
- current channel keeps streaming (both audio and video),
but if I try to change it (from menu; remote does not work)
screen goes black and it does not tune anything;
- Windows is unable to shut down (stays on "Shutting down..."
screen forever) until I unplug TBS5922 from USB port.

Overall, this looks to me like a "brownout" issue: "tuner" part
keeps running, but "controller" part is reset and stops working
until it is initialized again by unplugging & reinserting the device.

I thought this might happen because my PC did not provide
enough power to the device, so I tried with a better USB cable
(only 20 cm long) and also with a 2 amps powered hub, but
situation did not improve.

Finally I noticed that TBS5922 hanged more frequently during day
than during night, or when I used TV remote a lot.
I put some black tape on IR sensor: to my surprise, this actually
fixed the problem!
With no light hitting IR sensor, TBS5922 runs fine for many hours.

Do you have any suggestion on how I can fix this issue?
Do you think I have a faulty TBS5922?

Thank you for your help,

Ferruccio

This common problem for all TBS USB devices. Maybe bug in Cypress FX2 firmware or driver bug.

It should be getting it's power from the adapter not the USB cable

Not good: it means this is not a problem with a single faulty unit :(

Any workaround?
Registry key to disable IR sensor? Maybe I can at least avoid the sticky black tape....

For sure It does: it gets quite hot sometimes, it cannot get so hot with only
500 mA from USB port...

For the record, disconnecting either USB or adapter cable has the same effect:
Windows does device removal.
When I connect the cable again, TBS5922 resumes working (for a while).

Your idea saved me. I've been having that problem for almost 2 Years, and tried 3 different TBS 5922 boxes and all drivers available so far.
The Box would hang multiple times per day, a few times every hour. I even put a switch close to my seat so i can easily reboot the box, but it was still annoying as hell.

I read your post 3 days ago and put black tape above the sensor as well. I haven't had a single crash since then.
I don't need the included sensor, because i bought a separate one that doesn't require the TV application to have focus.

Now i can finally watch TV without worrying about crashes. It also fixed the issue, that it would take longer to switch channels every now and then.

Great!

This confirms that the issue is not with a single faulty device:
this is the way TBS5922 "works".

I should definetely resume my project to hook up
an IR sensor to microphone input:
